WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

Wise Young Things can run in any community with a venue or organisation willing to host it!

If you are hoping to be a Young Performer or Senior Storyteller, check out Locations to see if Wise Young Things is coming to your town soon. Senior Storytellers are usually senior members of their community who were born outside of Australia and/or spoke another language growing up. Young Perfomers are usually anyone aged 11 - 17 who loves performing and wants to learn about their community.

DO PARTICIPANTS NEED PRIOR EXPERIENCE?

Not at all! All workshops, rehearsals and filming have been designed to include people of all experience levels and backgrounds. You don’t need to be an avid storyteller or experienced performer to participate, you just need to be interested in your community and keen to give it a go!

WHAT ABOUT Young PEOPLE WHO WANT TO PARTICIPATE but don’t like performing?

Whilst our Senior Storytellers need to be comfortable sharing anecdotes from their lives in front of a small group, we have plenty of “behind-the-camera” roles for young people who want to participate but don’t want to perform in front of a camera. They could help with camera operating, directing, costume design, scouting filming locations, lighting, sound, props department, and more!

HOW LONG IS THE FINAL FILM?

Anywhere between 25 - 55 mins depending on the number of Senior Storytellers and the length of their stories. The final film can be edited to a specific length if required.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE FINAL FILM?

The final film is screened at a community event that suits you - for example, it could be a stand alone event or part of an exisiting festival in your town. After this screening, the film is hosted on this website and available for you to re-screen and share as desired. All participants will receive a copy of the final film via an unlisted video link.

WHEN IS WISE YOUNG THINGS AVAILABLE?

We are currently taking bookings for 2026, 2027 and 2028. Generally, we take bookings six months or more in advance.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Wise Young Things is always completely FREE for all participants and will not run in a community unless this can be guaranteed. Accesibiity for all community members is vital to the ethos of the project. For costs to venues and organisations, please get in touch to find out more - these vary depending on project length and complexity.

ARE THERE MINIMIMUM/MAXIMUM NUMBERS NEEDED TO RUN THE PROJECT IN MY TOWN?

Yes. Ideally, the project needs 8 - 15 Young Performers and 6 - 12 Senior Storytellers to be viable. It is easy to accomodate more Young Performers than Senior Storytellers. Greater numbers can be accomodated with an additional fee to cover additional faciliators and a longer finished film.

I’M A SCHOOL TEACHER or community group leader - CAN I RUN THIS PROJECT MYSELF?

Yes - very soon. We are currently working on a DIY Schools & Communities Pack - a handy “how-to” guide for running this project yourself. If you are interested, please get in touch for updates on when this resource will be ready.

WHAT WILL THE FILM BE ABOUT?

The storytelling workshops are centered around the themes of PLACE, IMMIGRATION, FAMILY, FRIENDS, CULTURE. LANGUAGE, and CHANGING TECHNOLOGY. Stories often tend to be about these topics, but storytellers are free to offer memories and anecdotes about anything they like, and young people are encouraged to ask any questions they like. Each film is totally unique to the storytellers and young people of the community in which the film is made.
